Monte Carlo methods for matrix computations on the grid

چکیده
Many scientific and engineering applications involve inverting large matrices or solving systems of linear algebraic equations. Solving these problems with proven algorithms for direct methods can take very long to compute, as they depend on the size of the matrix. The computational complexity of the stochastic Monte Carlo methods depends only on the number of chains and the length of those chains. The computing power needed by inherently parallel Monte Carlo methods can be satisfied very efficiently by distributed computing technologies such as Grid computing. In this paper we show how a load balanced Monte Carlo method for computing the inverse of a dense matrix can be constructed, show how the method can be implemented on the Grid, and demonstrate how efficiently the method scales on multiple processors. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Grid: A location dependent intensity modulated radiotherapy for bulky tumors
Background: An effective method for management of large and bulky malignant tumors. This treatment modality is also known as Specially Fractionated Radiation Therapy (SFRT). In this treatment technique a grid block converted the open radiation field into a series of pencil beams. Dosimetric characteristics of an external beam grid radiation field have been investigated using experimental and Mo...
متن کاملParallel Hybrid Monte Carlo Algorithms for Matrix Computations
In this paper we consider hybrid (fast stochastic approximation and deterministic refinement) algorithms for Matrix Inversion (MI) and Solving Systems of Linear Equations (SLAE). Monte Carlo methods are used for the stochastic approximation, since it is known that they are very efficient in finding a quick rough approximation of the element or a row of the inverse matrix or finding a component ...
متن کاملComputational Infrastructure for Parallel, Distributed, and Grid-Based Monte Carlo Computations
Monte Carlo applications are widely perceived as computationally intensive but naturally parallel. Therefore, they can be effectively executed using the dynamic bag-of-work model which is well suited to parallel, distributed, and grid-based architectures. This paper concentrates on providing computational infrastructure for Monte Carlo applications on such architectures. This is accomplished by...
متن کاملHigh performance quadrature rules: How numerical integration affects a popular model of product differentiation
Efficient, accurate, multi-dimensional, numerical integration has become an important tool for approximating the integrals which arise in modern economic models built on unobserved heterogeneity, incomplete information, and uncertainty. This paper demonstrates that polynomialbased rules out-perform number-theoretic quadrature (Monte Carlo) rules both in terms of efficiency and accuracy. To show...
متن کاملDose GRID increase the unwanted photoneutron dose to the patients in GRID therapy?
Introduction: GRID therapy is a treatment modality in which a high dose of radiation in a single fraction is given to the tumor. This technique previously was used to treat bulky tumors with orthovoltage beams. Recently, studies have been conducted to suggest that GRID therapy with megavoltage photons can be useful in palliative treatments. On the other hand, there has always ...
